EMPOWERment, Inc. is a Community Development Corporation with the mission of empowering individuals and communities to achieve their destiny through community organizing, affordable housing, and grassroots economic development.

What We Do

EMPOWERment. Inc. manages 58 affordable rental properties and 6 privately-owned homes in Orange County. All tenants earn 30-60% of the Area Median Income and EMPOWERment provides housing counseling, financial literacy training, and utility fund assistance as needed.

EmPOWERment also owns and operates the Midway Business Center, Orange County’s first small business incubator. The Midway Business Center develops small businesses by providing them a professional space, resources, and networking opportunities for their businesses.


How To Get Involved

Attend a Community Outreach Meeting, which are held two to four times a year. For more information, call our office (919-967-8779).

Hire a Career Explorer Intern through EMPOWERment’s Career Explorers program - an EMPOWERment initiative to pair local youth with paid internship opportunities for the summer.

Donate goods to our annual fundraiser or tenant meetings.

What is EMPOWERment up to?

July 28th: Open House on Gomains Avenue

Renovations are finally complete on this home donated by the Town of Chapel Hill in December 2021. EMPOWERment Inc. is so excited to be expanding our rental inventory! This new home will now support a local teacher in our community and their young son. Congratulations!

Minority business owners

April 23rd: Brightpath Solutions Small Business Workshop

EMPOWERment, Inc. had the chance to partner with Brightpath Solutions to provide a weekend strategic planning course for small businesses in the Chapel Hill area. EMPOWERment hosted a full room of eager business owners who successfully took on a day of financial, marketing, and grant-writing workshops.

 

December 16th: The Town Donates a Home to EMPOWERment, Inc.

The Town donated a single-family home previously located on North Street to EMPOWERment. The Town also provided $26,000 to aid EMPOWERment in moving the home to land in Northside.

 

October 24th: Cheers to 25 Years Fundraiser

EMPOWERment hosted our annual fundraiser celebrating 25 years of serving the Chapel Hill community. Over 300 attendees enjoyed wine from vendors including Show Crazy Wine, Empire Distributors, Ford Motor Beer, and Wegmans. Thanks to our loyal donors, we were able to raise over $75,000 to support affordable housing and economic development projects headed by EMPOWERment.

 

August 28th: House Us Now!

EMPOWERment took part in the House Us Now! Affordable Housing rally along with Community Empowerment Fund, the Jackson Center, and other community partners.

August 9th: Community Beautification Project

EMPOWERment, Inc. participated in a Community Beautification Project with neighbors and in partnership with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation. We want to highlight a friend of EMPOWERment, Karen, for all her contributions on that day!

 

April 21: Affordable Housing Unit Weatherization Project

EMPOWERment, Inc. has partnered with the Central Piedmont Community Action Inc. (CPCA)’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) to install proper weather manufacturing into two of EMPOWERment’s affordable housing units. The WAP assists low-income families and individuals in improving their comfort level and lowering their energy costs through the provisions of energy conservation measures and heating/air repair and replacement. Services include weatherization and energy conservation, heating/air repair and replacement program, duct sealing, caulking and air sealing, weather-stripping and insulation, vapor barriers, among others. The units also received new insulation, new smoke/carbon detectors, windows, and door sealants.

 

April 21: Affordable Housing Unit Renovation Project

EMPOWERment Inc. has begun a new partnership with Hope Renovations that aims to install grab bars in units with elderly tenants. Hope Renovations is a non-profit located in Carrboro that does small to mid-sized repairs, modifications and renovations for adults 55 and older so they can stay safe and independent in their homes as they age.

 

A Big Thank You to the Durham Regional Association of Realtors(DRAR) and the Triangle Mortgage Lenders Association(TMLA) for their contributions through the Carter- Davis Benefit Auction! Read More Below!

The Durham Regional Association of Realtors(DRAR) partnered with Triangle Mortgage Lenders Association(TMLA) for the 2022 Carter-Davis Benefit Auction on Thursday, October 13th at the Hope Valley Country Club. 

Thanks to member contributions and donations from local businesses and service providers, the auction was a huge success. Members generously bid on vacation homes, theme baskets, autographed memorabilia art, service packages, and more. The 2022 auction supported EMPOWERment Inc. to continue to help empower individuals and communities to achieve their destiny through community organizing, affordable housing, and grassroots economic development.  

Through the generosity of all donations and participants, the auction raised  $21,207, which will be presented to EMPOWERment Inc. on November 17th. 

On the behalf of all staff and board members at EMPOWERment Inc., we are truly grateful for the generosity of DRAR and TMLA for raising a significant amount of money that will help continue our mission of empowering individuals and communities.
